The Woodrow Poltergeist
Most of us have heard of the Enfield Poltergeist in London during 1977 - 1979 or the Black Monk of Pontefract in Yorkshire from 1966, well Redditch has it's own poltergeist story that hasn't had as much attention, perhaps we could change that?
Reports of poltergeist activity were reported in the 1970's. ATV made a short documentary about this. Wendy Jones interview with Mrs ****** about the strange happenings in her home which include a feeling of cold and a flying orange. We also see son *** ****** carrying out chemistry experiments at home which have been affected by the ghost. Wendy Jones next visits the nearby Wirehill Woods which are said to be the site of black magic rituals. She talks to Pastor Leslie Perkins of the Assembly of God Church, who thinks that an evil spirit is in the home and believes that the happenings have come about because of the use of a Ouija Board by young people, including Mrs ****** son. Finally medium Dora Stephens visits the home where she is put into a trance and described the family who had once occupied Shakespeare Farm, which was on the site now occupied by the council estate.

This estate was new and had just been completed by the then (planning & redevelopment). Most houses on this part of the Woodrow estate were occupied by young families with one or two children, new born to toddler age. Within 2 to 4 years 1974-1975 most of the occupants of these addresses had witnessed different unusual & unexplainable occurrences. These couldn't be explained away by the tricks of light & shadow. Whispering was heard by some resident's, even though they were home alone at the time. Moving objects witnessed by nearly all of the residents at one time or another. In some cases, partners would not stay in there houses alone while there partners we're not in the home with them. There were 3 attempts to investigate these disturbance's by a group from the then known Society of Psychic Research (SPR). Audio reel tape recordings that were recorded with no apparent noises at the time of recording and in seemingly empty rooms but on playback, clear whispering voices in some houses & in other houses anything from creeks, dragging noises and footsteps. There was a 3rd investigation in 1978 at a property in Astley Close, the investigation team we're frightened so much that one of the team left the house and vowed never to go back in. The reason for this emerged on the play back of the recording equipment after being left on it own for some hours, whispers could be clearly heard saying "we live, we live". No other investigation was ever carried out again. By 1982 most of the original residents of the 1970s had moved out, most were the witnesses of these events. There was an interview with one of the residents in 1980 on A.T.V. News about the activity, verifying their account of the disturbances and the audio recordings by the SPR.
